~TABLETOP TUESDAY and earthquake response..!

Once again it's time to thank Marty @ A STROLL THRU LIFE for hosting our opportunity to share a tabletop interest with others. Thanks, Marty!

On Easter Sunday my daughter Mary gave me this old nest she has had for years. It was abandoned and Mary finally decided to keep it. She gave it to me because I gave her my old vintage quilt I JUST BOUGHT! She thinks the Mother bird was killed by a cat or other animal as she never came back.

I had mixed feelings really, because it makes me sad. I know it happens in nature but it bothers me. In our way of seeing homes..this would be a palace. It's huge and yet these tiny eggs in it are so small. Those babies would have had so much room!

This isn't a good photo...but you can see the size of the nest compared to the eggs.

I nestled it into my silver bowl I bought for 50 cents a few weeks ago! I added a bit of fern and a tiny yellow flower.. What a lot of work that little Mommy bird went through to build this large strong nest. Obvious not a first time effort.

I noticed it even had a large piece of scotch tape or packing tape wedged into the back. I should have photographed that.... So sweet!

~~~I just wanted to let everyone know who commented, that Aunt and Uncle are fine. They are in their 90's so it was a concern. Just shaken.
October Farm...yep...you may just be right. I keep telling my sweet husband that we need to lay in a good supply of water and not just the 24 bottles (which are running low!) we keep on hand. Also some medical supplies and attach a wrench to our meter. The reason for this is that that we may not be able to get to tools and getting the gas off is of utmost importance!
This fault that runs up from Mexico comes very close to and may even be a part of the lower San Andres fault line. We are sitting almost directly on top of that fault line. On the way to Palm Springs we go through what is called the "badlands" and you can actually see the fault line...also on the way to Lake Tahoe. Other places as well.
I have lived all my life knowing that a HUGE earthquake, perhaps even larger than the 1906 San Francisco Quake, is possible
If you want to be riveted to a book about quakes..check out the book. I used to own it but not sure it is still around. The San Francisco Earthquake may be the name of the book and it takes you minute by minute through the quake. It is fascinating!! I would read it again but it would probably give me nightmares.
I just finished reading and refreshing my memory of the 1989 Cyprus freeway collapse and remembered the horrific television coverage of the disaster, watching it burn day after day in the news and how we all knew that people were in there dying.
I want to lay in a supply of water, medication, first aid kit, and food to last us awhile just in case.
Howard's of the opinion that he has lived here all these years and never needed it so why start now. We are at odds over this.
IF you are reading this Jane, ask Emerie to encourage Howard to take measures just in case.
He listens to his big brother more than anyone else on earth! Howard can be stubborn as all get out! Better to be safe than sorry.
Yes, I'm a little nervous about this. Not overly so, but I don't see why we shouldn't be prepared.
Let me tell you. Californian's are NOT prepared for what they like to call "THE BIG ONE!" Not at all. We would all run around like chickens with our heads cut off if it were to happen!
We would all hope our neighbors would help and expect them to if they had been smart enough to lay in provisions and take precautions as we have been instructed to do for YEARS AND YEARS.
I would just rather be safe than sorry! You know?
To all of you, thank you so much for your sweet and caring concern and comments!
As with any other place people live where there are risks....it's just a part of life.
Love and hugs,
Mona
  1. The books, plant and nest are such a lovely display. The nest truly is a mansion. It is all so pretty together.
    I am so glad you are all ok. I grew up in Calif in San Diego and have lived in LA twice, so I am very familiar with the quakes. I just always knew the Lord was in control. Thanks so much for joining the party. Hugs, Marty
  2. Good idea being prepared. You just never know when the big one can happen and it would be far better to have a little preparation then none at all.
  3. I am a chick who believes it pays to be prepared. We have power outages here due to ice storms and tornadoes that can last over a week. I always keep a supply of necessities on had just in case. Especially since we really do live out in the middle of nowhere here on the Ponderosa. I'm so glad your aunt and uncle are safe and sound. Take care.
    God bless and have a terrific Tuesday!!!
  4. Always good to be prepared even though Howard is probably right! Glad your realatives are safe. I didn't know you were right on the fault line! I don't think we are close to any but I'm curious now. I think I'll go look it up.
  5. Your nest is precious, Mona. You have such a good heart to think of that sweet Mommy bird and how hard she worked to build that nest for her children. It shows what a great, nurturing mother you are!!
    I think you are right to take precautions. I have always been a little hesitant to visit San Francisco because of the earthquakes and I know that is a bit foolish. I am terrified of all natural disasters! I'm glad that Aunt and Uncle are okay and hope that they take the precautions you mentioned. You are absolutely right on!
  6. Your vignette is lovely!
    We are in Phx and have taken precautions as well. There were folks in South West Phx that felt it. It can never hurt to be prepared. Whether it is an earthquake or some other emergency.
    Glad you are safe and I hope you had a blessed Easter!
  7. I enjoyed reading all of your blog but I think the wrench attached to the gas shut off is brilliant. I am from Southern California and pray there is never a major quake here in California in our lifetime or our offspring's lifetime.
  8. Mona, I was born in California and can remember an earthquake when I was a little girl. My parents got me out of bed and had me stand in the doorway. I've never forgotten it -- nature's phenomena are that way, I suppose. Big hug to you. Sounds like you are being very smart about stocking up. Hope you know about our really useful giveaway; come on over if you want a distraction. -- Jane F.
  9. I think your emergency quit is a great idea. (One I haven't done either though.) Glad everyone is doing well after the quake.
    Your nest is so beautiful. I don't think you should feel too sad because now (and with your daughter too, I'm sure) someone is appreciating its beauty.
  11. That is probably the sweetest nest and eggs I've ever seen. Such a hugh home for tiny birds.
    Yep, I would MUCH rather be safe than sorry. I've never lived where there's earthquakes. We run from tornados ! I dread May as it is the month a lot of them are around.
    Stay safe, sweet one.
  12. Yes I think You should be prepared, especially with water and first aid kits. It seemes the earths crust around the paciffic is very upset right now. Chile, Phillipine, Japan and now Mexico has had quakes just in a matter of weeks.
    Take care now!
    Christer.
  13. Mona...what a sweet nest...does make you wonder doesn't it? I am the same way...feel a little sad for the babies that didn't hatch. We are softies, aren't we?
    You are very smart to be preparing...I'm terrible at that kind of things.
    Hugs,
    Susan
  14. Yes, Mona, I checked it out and the active, known faults are along the coast or way north or south of us. We still feel the ones in the bay area even though we are way inland.
    I was thinking about the earthquakes and forgot to comment about the nest. It is a nice big one for such little eggs. We have some nests along the eaves of our house and I get to watch the parents standing guard on the edge of the sunroom roof from my kitchen window. I'll try to get a photo, after I clean my windows!
  15. Hi Mona....
    I'm with you! Let's get that emergency kit together. My Hubbs and I went round and round about earthquake insurance. I finally won and we have it. We've been expecting the BIG ONE here in the PNW for a long time too. When there's a whole bunch of shakin' going on around the world it makes me wonder if it's going to upset the fault here too. :-)
    Your little/big nest is so sweet. I have several of them too. One from my BFF and one from my daughter. I love them.
    Huggies,
    Spencer
  16. Oh Mona, I hope that big earthquake never happens. It's so scary to think about it. I am glad your aunt and uncle are fine. I love your vignette but you're right, it is so sad about the eggs.....Christine
  17. Preparation for that 'shake, rattle & roll' event is just plain smart ... it is going to happen! Just go do it, Mona & don't wait for anyone else. We've been thru some 'little big ones' (5s) & NO THANK YOU ever again.
    I am so glad that you went back to SPOKEO, incorrect info or not, they have no right to post anything.
    Love your birds nest & Easter decor.
    Have a lovely week.
  20. Hello Mona... so glad you stopped by!! First of all my mountains look familiar because we are practically neighbors!! I am in the North Fontana/North Rialto area by the 15 freeway that heads out towards the Cajon Pass! Glad you were not too rattled by our "shaker" last Sunday! I am still working on my kits. One for the cars, one for under our beds to grab and run if we have to and a bigger one just in case. I know I would rather be ready...
    I just loved your nest. How sweet and yet sad at the same time. That is truly a treasure!! Love your blog and will come by from time to time! Hugs!!
  21. Mona, love bird's nest too! Your story about the nest is so sweet. It's amazing how well those little birds can make a home! :)
  22. What a darling vignette...love that little bird's nest, it is shaped so perfectly.
  23. OH loved the little nest, but yes, it can be a little sad.
    I was thinking about you after the quake. And yes, you need to refurnish your supplies. And then - double it because we never stash enough. And don't forget about any pets.
    I hope our neighbors don't come a knocking! We have our motorhome parked on the side of the house. Course, nobody knows what's in it - but still. They'd have to know there is at least some supplies. I hadn't thought about people asking for help. Gosh! What would we do? I have enough for 4 of us, but not the whole neighborhood. Oh UGH! I just hope and pray we never have to worry about it.
    Mona, you should have a backpack full of supplies in each of your cars too . . . what happens if it hits and you are at the grocery store? I can send you a list of supplies that should be in each one - listing some items not everyone thinks about. Just let me know.
    Have a good weekend. I'm off to try and continue to play catch up on blog hopping!
    :) Karen
